On the 51st Anniversary of ERISA

On this day 51 years ago, President Gerald Ford signed the Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA") into law.

Groom's story began in the wake of this landmark regulation, and its protections have shaped the work we do today and will continue to do in the years to come. Milestone changes over the last 20 years – including the Pension Protection Act of 2006, the Affordable Care Act enacted in 2010, and, more recently, the SECURE Act of 2019 and the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 – have enhanced the benefits to workers while increasing the complexity for employers. Additionally, the explosion in ERISA litigation over the past 10 years has increased the costs of maintaining plans. Fortunately, employee benefit programs have weathered the storms and continue to provide valuable benefits to plan participants and their families.

From our office in Washington, D.C., today and every day, we celebrate ERISA and its enduring mission. We are grateful to practice in this area of law at a firm dedicated to this critically important part of society. We are confident Ted Groom would have been proud to see the firm that bears his name carry on his legacy.

Happy Birthday, ERISA!
